Why Handmade Soaps?
Unlike most soaps found in stores today, handmade soaps retain their natural glycerin. This glycerin is produced during the saponification process and acts as a natural lotion that moisturizes the skin. Large commercial soap makers are removing glycerin from their soap, selling it as a valuable by-product to other industries, leaving the consumer with a detergent chemical composition that lathers and cleans well but is harsh and can dry out the skin. . Alternatively, these artisan handmade soaps are carefully made in small batches with natural ingredients using the hot or cold process soap making method, or the basic melt and pour method, thus retaining their natural glycerin and capacity hydration.
Handmade soaps are created when a plant or animal fat is combined with a base agent known as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide then the saponification process occurs. Originally, people made soap by combining melted animal fats with a liquid solution made from hardwood ashes and rainwater. Everything was mixed in a large outdoor cauldron and took hours and hours of stirring and waiting. Of course, back then there was no way to accurately measure or even know the quantity or quality of detergent needed and it often ended up with caustic soap or a real mess! Nowadays, with the wide range of resources available, the process is much simpler and the incredible choice of products such as fragrances, colors, oils and shapes help us offer quality and luxury soap.
Why Use Handcrafted Soaps?
Handcrafted soap, unlike most of the soap found commercially, retains the glycerin that is made during saponification process. This glycerin alleviates dryness and acts as a natural lotion. Big commercial soapmakers remove the glycerin from their soap - selling it as a valuable byproduct to other industries and leaving the consumer with a chemical-laden detergent that lathers and cleans well but is harsh and drying to the skin. Artisan soaps on the other hand, are carefully made in small batches using the hot or cold process soapmaking method, or the melt and pour base method. They retain their natural glycerin and moisturizing ability and are usually made with all natural ingredients.
Handcrafted soap is created when an animal or vegetable fat (acid) is combined with an base agent (caustic alkali) known as either sodium hydroxide (lye) or potassium hydroxide (potash) and the process of saponification occurs. Up until the last century, people originally made soap by combining rendered animal fat with the liquid solution made from hardwood ashes and rainwater, mixing it together in a big cauldron outdoors and stirring it by hand for hours and hours on end!! Of course back then there was no way to accurately measure or even know the amount or quality of the lye needed and they usually ended up with either really caustic soap or a big drippy mess! But thanks to the wide range of resources available today, the amount of purified lye needed can be calculated exactly so that wonderfully nourishing and even beautiful works-of-art soap can be made with an amazing array of different oils and butters, scents, additives , embellishments, colors, shapes and designs.
